There were three problems I realized from the original...

1. I found it less natural for squirrels, specifically redwall squirrels to be on the ground. It didn't portrayed their character as much as I intended to, so I re-illustrated him on his natural environment.

2. His costume from the original looks like a incoherent mash up of random clothing. Other than that, squirrels are commonly portrayed as scouts and archers.

3. Most people remember Rakkety Tam from the original illustration. It's not supposed to be that way. Rather, the illustration should represent the race in general.

Either way, even if it's a recreation, it's a great piece as are all of your other works.

When you think about it, don't you think squirrels in the Redwall universe are kinda like Tolkien's elves?

I've been writing manuscripts for a book with a similar concept to Redwall, as well as Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. In the book I'm writing, there's also a race concept similar to what you've described—birds and squirrels are like elves (birds of prey, however, are sort of like dark elves), moles are dwarves, mice are hobbits, rats (which are not typically evil here) are humans and lizards are orcs.
