I will not deny: Foxes are one of my favorite animals. But I don't romanticize them. Every animal has their positives and negatives...and as much as I like foxes: the foxes of Redwall have earned their position as tricksters and deceivers.

But that's from what we've seen in the series. I'm positive there are foxes who do not follow the stereotypes of the many in Redwall.

Why you gotta make the vermin all look like negative, demonized, degenerate stereotypes?  Facepalm

Hi sir,

It seems this really old image has caused you some discomfort. For that reason I apologize in advance. While of course, I don't think foxes or the rest of the animals which are referred to as vermin in Redwall are universally evil in all literature and media at all, that's just how they are mostly and generally depicted in the Redwall universe, and the goal of this series of images, Redwall Races, are my attempts to personally interpret how they are always viewed in books. In other words, the goal was to be as faithful as possible to the general.

That said, I made these images during a time when I only read a couple of books such as Martin the Warrior being the first, "Redwall"(the 1st book), High Rhulain, Mattimeo, thus my impressions of foxes, rats, ermine and such are more or less set in stone. That is until I've discovered Mossflower and Outcast of Redwall (which sadly I only read the synopsis of). From there on, I've started to develop an issue with the Redwall universe, similar to your concern. That's why I get progressively inspired to do an image to break the mold, particularly woodland creatures and vermin treat each other as friends and equals chichapie.deviantart.com/art/C… .

That said, I still respect the universe canon, and if the goal was to illustrate characters based on the canon, vermin or not, I will be faithful to how they are depicted, or at least depict them based on their general idea. I hope this response was helpful :)

Kind Regards

I apologize for what was kind of a negative comment made a little too quickly, and thanks for clearing up any confusion.  It's just that I'm in that process of rereading the series as an adult and my childhood is, well, going up in flames.  Finding out just how disturbingly racist, dark and mature the stories actually are has left me a little disillusioned for lack of a better word.  I opened them up again while thinking up a new novel to write, and sort of got addicted for the wrong reasons.

From a writer's perspective, they had so much potential to be better and honestly sometimes had horrible character development and some truly sick morals (I'm mainly talking about Outcast there, you don't have to read the book...it might just be the worst story of all time, Veil being the only silver lining).  The heroes were always the victim, almost never the cause of their own grief.  No real problems, no regrets, no flaws, nothing.  Few actual dynamic characters or redemption stories.  The theme just kept turning into the same supremacist, eugenicist message over and over again: the great, glorious, pure "master races" trampling the evil, vile, pathetic vermin scum who just need to be punished for existing.  As if vermin are incapable of understanding the concept of love, or feeling the same emotions from losing loved ones, and all the good things in life that seemed to define the "goodbeasts".  Just not a good message to send to kids...

That being said, the Redwall universe is still an amazing set of stories, and my dislike of it's patterns does not mean in any way I hate the series.  There are quite a few aspects of it that I loved, especially minor characters that were missed opportunities, such as Brookflow from Rakkety Tam, or the way Salamandastron had all the makings of a forbidden friendship story.  It might just be a writer's habit, picking apart stories and reading between the lines a lot they way I've done with Redwall.  I completely understand and respect your faith to the universe canon, and your work is honestly some of the best out there and I wish I had that kind of commitment.  So again, apologies and thanks for the comment and response, and don't stop making art.  You've got talent there.

Maybe this is just perspective, but is the Fox the same size as, say, the mice you've done?

This is still a good pic and all, but it's always kind of bothered me why(at least in the show) the Foxes are just as tall as the Rats.

Nope, they're not of the same size. Just scaled up/down to the optimal size in terms of viewing clarity.

Also i agree with SpawnFire88 foxes are great animals and are always misjudged! When they steal chickens well they kinda have too so yes there is racisme to foxes and that is bad.

But you can't really blame people for hating foxes reason. If I made money with chickens and needed them to pay for my house and family, then I would be very pissed if a fox, or other predator like a marten, came and stole them.

'Sides, I Imagine many Australians don't like foxes.

Most fox, wolf, weasel or predator haters in general I met don't really hate the animal: They hate what they are doing. For example, if a rancher loses his livestock to wolves, it would be weird if he wasn't angry or upset.

You have a very good point... But since I dont have a farm or any other animals I dont mind them/even like them!

Never said I didn't like them. I just understand why some people wouldn't like them. A childhood friend of mine lived on a farm with a family, and a predator once killed several of their chickens. The predator was most likely a fox, or perhaps a species of mustelid. But they defenitly had reasons to dislike foxes.
